How to optimise content for AI search without writing generic SEO pages

AI search changes the discovery problem from winning a click to becoming a source worth citing. The answer is not more keyword stuffing. It is clearer expertise, evidence and useful answers.

Search is becoming more conversational. People can ask longer questions, compare options, add constraints and continue with follow-up questions. Google says AI Overviews are now used by more than 1.5 billion people each month, and in the US and India they drive more than a 10% increase in usage for query types where they appear.

That does not make traditional SEO irrelevant. It changes the job. SEO helps a page become discoverable. Answer-oriented content helps the page become useful enough to be surfaced, understood and cited when a system constructs an answer.

SEO, AEO and GEO are different jobs

SEO is the broad discipline of making content discoverable and useful in search. AEO focuses on producing clear answers to questions that can be surfaced directly. GEO is the broader effort to make a brand and its information legible and citable across generative answer systems.

Build around the questions a buyer actually asks

A keyword such as marketing strategy is useful, but a buyer's real question is richer: How do I know whether I have an acquisition problem or a conversion problem? What should a B2B marketing strategy include when most pipeline comes from referrals? How much should I spend before I know which channel is working? Those questions contain context, constraints and a desired outcome.

Give the answer early, then earn the depth

An AI system needs to understand the main answer quickly. A human reader needs the reasoning underneath. Start with a clear thesis, then explain the mechanism, evidence, exceptions and practical application. This structure serves both readers and answer engines.

Make claims easy to verify

If you cite a market statistic, name the source and date. If you make a claim about a product, explain the basis. If you compare approaches, define the criteria. If you present a framework, explain where it comes from and how it should be used. Narrow, well-supported claims are more useful than vague authority.

Create original information where possible

The strongest GEO asset is information competitors cannot reproduce by asking the same model. That can be original research, a proprietary framework, first-hand case evidence, customer observations, experiments, benchmark data or a distinctive point of view. Your consulting experience is therefore an SEO asset.

Build an answerable website, not just an article library

AI systems and human buyers both need basic facts to be easy to find. What do you do? Who is it for? What problems do you solve? What evidence supports the claim? What do you not do? What does the process look like? What happens after someone contacts you? Case studies, services, resources and the book page provide the entity context around the articles.

Measure citation and discovery, not just rankings

Use Google Search Console for impressions, clicks, CTR, queries and page performance. Bing Webmaster Tools now provides AI Performance reporting, including cited pages, citation activity and grounding queries across Microsoft Copilot and other supported AI experiences. Then connect discovery to commercial outcomes such as qualified enquiries, resource downloads and calls.

The goal is not to make an article look optimised. It is to make the site increasingly difficult to replace when someone asks an important question in your category.
